
Ottawa - Dr. Calvin Stiller was recently named an Officer of the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada was established in 1967, during Canada's centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. It is regarded as one of our country's highest civilian honours. This is a promotion for Dr. Stiller within the order for his "leadership as a medical entrepreneur and for his advancement of scientific research and innovation."
He was a catalyst in organ transplantation (Multi-Organ Transplant Service - MOTS) in London's University Hospital, the first of its kind in Canada. Dr. Stiller proved that the drug Cyclosporine was useful for combatting tissue rejection after kidney transplantation. This also led to demonstrating Cyclosporine as an immunosuppresant and its effectiveness to halt the progression of Type 1 Diabetes, as an immune disorder.
Dr. Stiller was influential in co-founding and establishing research centre programs and healthcare funds in the past. Among them: The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, Robarts Research Institute, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund Inc., MaRS and the Stiller Centre for Technology Commercialization.
Dr. Calvin Stiller has received numerous prestigious awards and honours, namely Member of the Order of Canada (1995), the Order of Ontario (2000), Queens Jubilee Award (2002), The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and the Canada Gairdner Wrightman Award (both in 2010).
